Svetlana Atlavina is a multi-media artist who lives and works in London, UK. Svetlana holds an MA degree in Printmaking from the Cambridge School of Art and participated in the MA & Other Postgraduates Exhibition at The Atkinson Gallery, Millfield, in 2020. Svetlana received an NLPG ACE during the COVID-19 pandemic to develop online art educational resources for NHS CPFT Mental Health Hospitals. Currently, her research in Ceramics and Augmented Reality is supported by DYCP Arts Council England and focuses on enhancing experiences from clay and AR inspired by childhood memories.
Svetlana has been teaching collaborative and participatory practices at BNU for three years, participated in a collaborative art educational event at Cambridge University for impartially blind audiences in March 2024, and provided creative workshops for the Art Therapies Association in 2021-2022. Svetlana’s art research concerns empathy, controversial issues hidden in the human psyche, women’s role in society, natural forms, memories and unconscious feelings.
She frequently participates in exhibitions around the UK and abroad with artist-led collectives.
Ceramics in Augmented Reality
The ACE-funded Ceramics in Augmented Reality project aimed to explore the nature of immersive art techniques through a series of six guided creative workshops called ‘My Mother and I’. It is an ongoing research project that combines working processes within two media: clay and AR. The objective of the research is to coax images from unconscious memories reflecting on the link between our childhood development and adult creativity, a connection I have experienced in Svetlana’s own creative practice. She has completed the project’s first stage and is still analysing the data gathered through these public workshops involving more than 20 participants.
During Maker Monday, you will have a chance to experience her workshop format allowing the creation of cross-disciplinary artworks based on interactions between the real-world physical manipulation of clay and the virtual-world visualisation of AR. In each workshop, the expression of recollections through physical activities with clay is followed by the expansion of thinking through exercises in AR, either with a AR headset or with a smartphone app. The project presents participants with the physical experience of the virtual mental space we think through when creating.
