Short Course: Basic Woodworking

Monday 7, 14, 21 and 28 October, 10am-1pm

This course runs across four weeks and participants must attend all four sessions.

Over the four weeks participants will each make an ash and birch plywood side table. In doing so you will learn a variety of jointing techniques and in doing so develop traditional hand-skills and become confident in the use of basic woodworking machinery and power tools.

This course has been designed for people who have ideas they would like to develop, but who need to develop skills and confidence in the wood workshop. Exploring these various methods will introduce participants to the basic skills which form a foundation for prototyping and mocking up design ideas.

The course will include:

  • An introduction to marking and measuring tools
  • Marking and measuring mortice and tenons
  • Handcutting tenons
  • Chiselling joints
  • Drilling and screwing joints
  • Bandsawing joints
  • Linear beltsanding components
  • Hand planing components
  • Gluing Components
  • Sanding for finishing

Spaces are very limited and priority will be given to self-employed sole traders and people with their own businesses who have an idea they would like to develop at STEAMhouse. This course is designed for individuals with limited experience of working in a wood workshop who want to develop more skills and confidence.

Please send an expression of interest outlining:
  • Why you would like to take part in the course
  • Whether you are a self-employed sole trader or a business
  • Where you are based
