For this STEAMlab we invite you to explore the theme ‘Re-Imagining the Pump – how can this fantastic youth facility better position itself as a hub for creative enterprise and learning for young people.’

We are pleased to announce we will be working with The Pump, a charity based in East Birmingham set up to support young people, with a focus promoting personal development, employability and creativity. The Pump is designed by young people for young people, and believes working collaboratively with partners to provide a holistic and integrated service is a key part of a solution.

Through recent investment in a makerspace and music studios, The Pump is seeking to maximise young people’s creativity and increase engagement to help motivate and inspire them to be the best they can, whilst developing a model for sustainability.

This STEAMlab will address questions including:

  • How we can work together to find practical solutions by exploring new ventures.
  • What ways are there to promote technology as a route to opportunity and employment for young people.
  • How could The Pump promote their new offer and put themselves on the map as a go-to hub.
  • How can The Pump and other centres engage with schools and FE providers to collaborate on pre-entry support for young people – widening participation agenda.
  • How can The Pump turn challenges into real opportunities.
  • What ways can we find to empower young people to feel part of society and give them an equal voice

Please join us, be part of the conversation and help collectively and collaboratively shape the future of our youth centres.

Speakers include:

Ian Ward – Leader of Birmingham City Council

Amy Clamp – Beatfreeks

Charlotte Lintern – The Pump

Please note, this is a two day STEAMlab and participants will need to attend 4-7.30pm on the Tuesday and 9.30am-5.30pm on the Wednesday, please let us know in advance if this is an issue for you.

(Oh, and if you have one, please bring your laptop along with you)

What is a STEAMlab?

A STEAMlab is a hack-style event in which we bring individuals and companies together to collaborate and work together to find creative solutions to a real problem faced by another business. The Pump will be the focus in this STEAMlab.

Why? We believe that by working with peers from different industries, with different skillsets, we will be able to combine our knowledge and expertise to develop a solution to the problem – or as the old saying goes “two heads are better than one.”

STEAMlabs are a high-energy, creative and collaborative event, with the opportunity for new solutions to be fast-tracked and/or funded for the next stage of development!

Why attend our STEAMlabs?

  • Selected teams can gain access to support and funding to turn your ideas into solutions
  • Discover new ways of thinking which can be applied to your business
  • Make new connections with a variety of local professionals, creatives, SMEs and more
  • Be inspired to innovate and take your business to the next level

Event Agenda:

Day 1:

1) Introduction and context

2) Input – provocations, ideas, inspiration, examples

3) Facilitated group work on ideas – using prompt questions to help explore the different themes.

4) Small groups, discussion, capture ideas and cluster > use to form themes/topics for main working

Day 2:

1) Understanding themes, choose working groups (small: 4-5 people), understanding skills and what you can bring to a discussion/group

2) Starting to explore each theme in groups – open / divergent phase

3) Refining those thoughts and ideas / solutions into – closing / convergent phase

4) Pitching back / sharing ideas – to help focus the ideas into a clear form to aid communication

The exact agenda may be refined (or hacked!) and shaped through further pre-work between the STEAMhouse and Pump teams.

STEAMhouse is wheelchair accessible. Please contact us at to discuss any other access needs.
