I have a VHS cassette from the summer of 1994. It’s a wedding video in Smethwick. Dozens of guests gather outside our house. Some push a burgundy Mercedes with ribbons of flowers across the bonnet up the road toward the edge of frame. Others hurl Scottish pound notes on the roof as kids scoop up the cash like a frenzy of feeding fish. Aside from my nostalgia for suits two sizes too big and the wild bushy haircuts, I’ve always known I’d come back to make a project that explores it’s meanings, for in that frame lies the universe I was born in.
I was thirteen years old that summer; most of the factory jobs men came for were gone, and the men who’d arrived with little more than a suitcase and a handful of currency now owned houses and had young families, attempting to recreate their old lives in this new corner of the world. With family ties to the Punjab waning, the big move had become more complex than anyone foresaw. Our families were at a crossroads, each was battling to keep it together, with losses and victories across generational and cultural lines.
I’m deeply fascinated by the early years and have memorialised them in my artist film Year Zero: Black Country and more recently in a series of fine art photographs that resurrect mythologies and testimonies from the time. I believe they open up an unexpected universe of exploration.

I am an Architectural Illustrator.
I create 3D illustrations of Birmingham landmarks and buildings around the world, firstly visiting the locations (when possible) to take accurate reference photos and measurements and then inputting this information into AutoCAD, and drawing the building/structure brick by brick, or as accurately as possible. Artistic license sometimes creeps on a heavily detailed image.
The drawing is then broken down into building blocks and printed onto thick water colour paper. These individual pieces are cut out by hand using a craft knife, and layered with thick card between the sections, creating a subtle shadows and a 3D effect.
At STEAMhouse I am creating an architectural chess set based on the city's current and historical landmarks and influential structures.
I'm a visual artist with a background in installation and spacial design. I currently work in collage and animated collage, creating digital spaces through the dissection and layering of images, allowing people to explore themes of desire and voyeurism.
I have recently worked with brands like Prada, Calvin Klein 205W39NYC, Vivienne Westwood, Mulberry and Hermes, as well as publications like Document Journal, Self Service Magazine and Dust Magazine.
I'm working towards a solo exhibition titled “Poor dead flower?”, which is made up of sculptures, collage, photography and film. It aims to remind us of the beauty in being sensitive, vulnerable and compassionate, and takes apart images and ideas of masculinity to allow us to question and analyse what it means to be complete. My main focus is in creating a greek style statue made from flowers, as well as printing collaged imagery on to a variety of materials.
Mango Ha Ha Ha
I've recently completed MA Visual Communication at Birmingham City University. My creative work is rooted in (but not exclusive to) graffiti etched bus shelter windows. My main work is wall art, photography, film, music, furniture and fashion. I designed a jacket as wearable art , this is the first jacket made using the graffiti etched windows photography I take as a fabric print. Although the artwork is chaotic and abstract the art is encapsulated in the formal neat design of a tuxedo. Punk was about deconstruction, my work is about reconstruction. Taking the mundane anti social behaviour of destruction of property, in this case bus shelter windows and elevating it into something beautiful and creative.
As well as Business Development, at STEAMhouse I am working on producing unique 3D printed buttons for any of the bespoke art wear that I create. At this point the bespoke jackets are only available with matching fabric buttons. I'm also working on full size rota-cast clear resin anatomically correct sculptures that will be used to display the clothing. A fashion show/installation is being worked on where the buttons and sculptures will be on display as part of the installation.
Through STEAMhouse I'll be expanding the use of sculpture in my practice, making masks of my parents, that close around different parts of my body, pushing them into different positions. These will be used for photographs, and will show alongside them.
My practice, in a nutshell, looks at the constructed reality of the family, through the constructed reality of photography.
I am currently heading a modelshop at Glenn Howells Architects where we make architectural models showcasing GHA designs. I've been in the making industry for 15+ years and having dipped in and out of designing and making products, homewares and furniture in the past however, I recently decided to put a little more of a push and shove into the latter.
I decided to design and make a furniture line with an ode to midcentury modern 'danish',yet for it to be accessible to the young professional. It has been dubbed as 'furniture for a young family home' and will consist of an extendable table, 4 dining chairs and 2 stools.
So far I have designed, made and manufactured the dining chair. STEAMhouse played a big part in this as I took my designs, refined, prototyped and manufactured it with their help. I'm now working on the table, which I am sure STEAMhouse will play a big part again.
I will be exhibiting and showcasing the complete furniture line at London Design Fair in September over the weekend of 19th-22nd at the Truman Brewery in East London.
Larry is Managing Director at Noble Digital, a full-service digital agency based in Stourport-on-Severn. Noble Digital combines experience in Digital Marketing, User Experience, Media and Design to make big business know-how available to everyone else.
Larry started his career in the agency world consulting for some of the world's largest banks on User Experience (UX) and new media. He later led the UX function for a London-based market trading firm and then headed up the UX, Design and Front-End Development teams for a technology firm until their acquisition. Most recently, he led a Birmingham VR startup, securing the attention of multiple corporate clients and ultimately founded Noble Digital to promote technology as a force for good within businesses.
Larry's project at STEAMhouse is interested in finding ways to use new processes and materials to speed up and modernise traditional book-binding techniques.

The Luvvit Company
Hi, I'm Jon Elliott, and I run The Luvvit Company. It's a good name, because it can be about anything you love doing.
So, it started with graphics, photography, multimedia, 2D and 3D design. Then I got into sound and became an FE teacher, which is where I started learning about sound in more depth, and how it relates to art, dance, images, moving images, and so on. One day I'd had my fill of teaching and decided to make things, which is when it became TLC Amplifiers and also synths, organs and mixing desks, and the first Branston Amplifiers appeared. Then, earlier this year, with help from STEAMhouse, I completely re-branded my amp designs as Brelliott Amps.
I got involved in a STEAMlab in May 2017, and registered straight away after that. At STEAMhouse I am mainly developing AmpModula, which is a modular build guitar amplifier system. My aim is to provide the flexibility of sound and tone that I can provide with a fully custom hand-built amp in a click-together fully modular PCB based solution. They are designed so that people with limited soldering and assembly skills can build an amp to their own specification, much in the same way as you would assemble a PC, or a piece of flat-pack furniture.
Not content with all that, I have 5 kids, play guitar & vocals in a band called DeadNumbers, am part of an art & music collective called Werewolf Workshop, organise and crew live events, and I'm also T'ai Chi instructor.
I am producing an interactive VR experience, Imperceptible Dance, which maps the “immersants’” (Davies) affect during the encounter. I have developed a prototype vest, using an Arduino GSR (galvanic skin response) monitor to measure the emotional response of the participant, by mapping the electronic currents in the hand. There is also a tracker on the vest, which gives live feedback to the participant, and an Arduino which is programmed to respond to the movements of the immersant.
I have designed a vest that is soft and fits the contours of both a female and a male body; to challenge the traditional gaming vest. It is made from recycled felt using plastic bottles, and the reverse was printed at STEAMhouse using the sublimation printer, from a photograph of a 3D scan of a sculpture, which was taken during a masterclass at the Data Arena, UTS, Sydney, November 2017.
I aim to engage young people in contemporary art through emerging technologies, in particular young women/girls with digital technologies, that are traditionally perceived as “male”, introducing them to VR, and the possibilities it opens up.
My practice explores the changing nature of the relationships we have with our bodies, other organisms and the environment. I am curious about the human impulse to change, control and manage our environments; the very trait that has resulted in our success as a species, yet conversely continues to create our biggest problems. It is the unexpected consequences of our actions and how we manage to accommodate the unexpected and, sometimes, unwelcome results that particularly attracts my attention. I am also fascinated by how we perceive the natural world and use concepts of ‘natural’ as filters to critically examine human activities. My work aims to align art and science through a shared purpose of describing human experience, while unhinging certainty by disturbing the familiar.
Project work at STEAMhouse has focused on improving my welding skills and developing means to create more modular elements that allow me to reconfigure sculptural and installation pieces.
I’m an artist working in sculpture. I exhibit in art galleries and museums and make permanent artworks for the public realm. I also run Studio Outlet, which sells things made by artists.
I make art to think about relationships with objects; using the museum as a case study my recent practice is a collection of artifacts and characters I use to think about what objects are and how we know them. My most recent works are made from plaster, acrylic, copper and ceramics.
I’m using STEAMhouse to test out and learn new ways of making art that would ordinarily be too expensive to experiment with or are usually inaccessible to individual artists.
So far I have been based in the print studio, where I’ve learned new knowledge and skills. I’ve explored sublimation printing onto a variety of surfaces including chiffon fabric and card. I’ve also learned how to screenprint, and have made new prototype clay tiles with screenprinted imagery and a selection of inks and hot print foils.
The next phase is to test out some display armatures for new clay pieces, which will both present objects and be sculptural elements of the work. I don’t know how the clay objects will meet with the steel, or how the steel structures might develop through hands on exploration, and I’m excited about having a prolonged period of access to kit (welding, bending and cutting) to experiment, rework and resolve.
I am an artist and academic with an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art and a PhD in material culture studies (awarded 2009 University of Wolverhampton).
For over 25 years I've exhibited in the UK and overseas and my work is held in institutional collections including the V&A and the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford.
I was artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2017 and recently participated in #ITVCreates, the channel's on screen re-branding project.
I'm at STEAMhouse to explore a project about the craft of marquetry and veneering. I'm interested in the poetics and mechanics of repair and in celebrating the natural defects in surfaces.
Raven Warboards is a tabletop terrain design company that designs a variety of terrain tiles and pieces for the tabletop war games industry, model railway and diorama hobbyists.
Designed for 25-32mm scales the board seamlessly connect in a variety of different patterns and positions creating a different table top landscape every time. The tiles connect using a series of magnets; no use for small clips or dowels which can easily can lost or broken.
Shaheen Ahmed works with maps; cutting, layering and stitching to create small-scale reliefs. These sculptural objects contain tent-like elements that explore the idea of sanctuary relating to the destitute and the downtrodden and seek to reflect, more generally, on the history of global diasporic communities. The relief structures also evidence an interest in Islamic pattern work, particularly that of the Alhambra Palace, a building that symbolises, for Shaheen, the importance and longevity of the coexistence of different cultures and perspectives within Europe.
Shaheen has worked with the Ikon Gallery Birmingham, as an artists’ mentor. This took her to Karachi in Pakistan; she was subsequently, the lead artist on a related project linking schools in Birmingham and Karachi. Her recent residency at the Lapworth Museum of Geology, University of Birmingham, has enabled her, through collaboration with Dr Carl Stevenson, to look at the movement of people in relation to geophysics. Shaheen studied book binding and gestural mark making with esteemed calligraphers and binders in Italy as part of year long residency with the National Trust in 2007. In 2007 she received the Alhambra Award for Excellence in the Arts.
Using her brush marks Shaheen is working towards creating a light projection with her time at Steamhouse, and her studio at the Old Print Works in Balsall Heath and once a month at Lapworth Museum of Geology.
I'm an artist / printmaker.
My focus has been centred around luck and financial trappings, using the lottery with an emphasis on scratch cards as a symbol of escape, a golden ticket juxtaposed with day to day realities. I've been especially drawn to scratch cards due to their aesthetic appeal, finite shelf life and winning algorithms.
Through research and experimentation my aim is to create artefacts using minimum wage as a price point.
Leon Trimble is a digital artist who works in audio visual performance. He specialises in immersive video and synth design. He owns a 360 degree projection dome with surround speaker array and runs it as a venue at English summer festivals with an exciting programme of music and visual artists. He is working with astrophysicists at Birmingham University using his Gravity Synth - based on a Michelson Interferometer (gravitational wave detector) - for science engagment and is planning a tour of the UK with a programme of art based science artists in 2019. This will entail him devising a 360 degree laser mapping to visualise what the synthesisers are doing, but also allows a live artist to draw in a shared VR space in laser beams.
At STEAMhouse he is developing The Empathy Machine, a light and sound based immersive system for facilitating a conversation between two people, detecting and feeding back their general emotional state through the use of colours and sounds.

O’Hare and D’Jafer are an applied arts design studio, involved in the creation and manufacture of luxurious leather furnishings. Architects, interior designers, and art consultants, working within 5 star hotels, luxury ships and private residences around the world specify our work.
We strive to create unique and intriguing solutions for feature wall surfaces applicable to both commercial and residential projects on land and sea. We fill the art decorative solution, functional as well as good to look upon. The hand work and craftsmanship of our studio combined with the latest digital technology bring soul to the projects.
The Terrain moulded leather wall panels is our first project with STEAMhouse, the pieces were launched in September 2018 at Decorex International Expo London. Since October 2018 having completed numerous development meetings with new clients, we have listened to customer concern, we believe it can be resolved through the pivot of our wall panels. We have identified that through a reduction in scale of the wall panels into interlocking tile sections we will have a viable commercial product.
To develop this product we need to resolve a series of technical design and manufacture questions that will require machinery not available to us currently. Working with STEAMhouse will facilitate the development process in good time for product launch.
I am an artist, educator and founding member of Grand Union Studios and Gallery. I have taught since 2002 and am the course leader for the Art and Design Foundation course at Dudley College.
My practice is underpinned by an interest in simulated environments and applying concepts such as pareidolia to an art practice.
At STEAMhouse I am learning new skills in marquetry and digital manufacturing and working alongside fellow members Intervention Architecture to design and build a bespoke exhibition structure and LAB that will tour a display of new sculpture, film and photographic work alongside plant and food outcomes.
I have been researching the life and legacy of politician Joseph Chamberlain and wish to engage a wide audience in discussions on cultural, political and global conservation issues. Chamberlain’s flamboyant dress and trademark buttonhole orchid made him an instantly recognisable figure in the 19th Century but at what environmental cost did maintaining this extravagant image have? The project aims to be an advocate for ongoing research between UK and Colombian academic and cultural institutions and raise the loss of biodiverse environments.
The project ‘Mr Chamberlain’s Orchids’ has received generous funding from Arts Council England, Bruntwood, The Feeney Trust, University of Birmingham, New Art West Midlands, and The Chamberlain Highbury Trust and will run from Summer 2019 to Spring 2020.
The Birmingham Music Archives is a cultural and creative arts organisation that captures, documents and celebrates the musical culture of Birmingham. We believe Birmingham’s music history, heritage and culture should be central to the city’s place-making activities, narratives and cultural offer.
The BMA repurposes the materials associated with music history, heritage and culture to develop participatory projects such as exhibitions, tours, talks, youth and community focused projects and broadcast media (films and radio). We currently have an engaged community of over 7000 active citizen archivists across our platforms who upload materials and memories of Birmingham and its music culture. We're currently working on creating street maps related to Birmingham's music for outdoor use to explicitly link music culture to place across the city utilising STEAMhouse's knowledge and equipment to experiment with design and materials.
Faisal Hussain is an experienced Creative Producer and Artist who graduated from Falmouth Art College in 1999.
He is currently an artist in residence in Berlin at Urban Nation and is also working on touring his continuing solo exhibition 'Suspect Objects Suspect Subjects'. This first solo show has seen Faisal asked to speak at The University of Birmingham, on BBC National & local news & The National in UAE.
He is the Director of True Form Projects which produced the Four Fathers project and is currently concluding a new project called 'Asian Youth Culture' shown at Birmingham City University's Parkside Gallery and at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
His broadcast work ranges from a BBC 2 Series, original journalism reports for BBC Radio, freelance voice-over work and a TV series looking at Muslim Diasporas throughout Europe for ntr France.
Faisal has also worked with many arts organizations, social enterprises, and businesses, and has produced a variety of media for them, including graphic and web design, video and audio production.
As part of his inter-disciplinary practice, current works are wall-mounted sculptures and depictions of landscapes created using different materials with additional moving image, static visual art, photography. These pieces are inspired by the photography of different locations found online and discovered.

We're working on the BlowerBox - a fast and easy way to measure the airtightness and spot leakage in cabinets for displaying and preserving against pollution and moisture.
I am a multi-disciplinary artist primarily working with metal, print and lighting, fabricating materials to create meaningful narratives that aim to inspire and uplift.
Although I consider myself to be an emerging artist and interdisciplinary maker, I worked in the creative industries for 25 years and as an independent theatre and event producer for the last 12 years, before completing a Masters in Art & Design Interdisciplinary Practice at Birmingham City University (BCU) in 2017. I have had work featured in exhibitions including Pulpa at RK Burt Gallery in London (2017) and The King & I at &model in Leeds (2017). I received a curatorial grant from New Art West Midlands in 2018.
So far at STEAMhouse, I've worked in collaboration with artist, Anne Brierley, on a commission from Aintree Hospital to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS, which was installed in the hospital in April.
For the next 6 months I'll focus on developing a prototype for a beneficial and responsive lighting product based on the principles used in Human Centric Lighting and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) systems to create a lighting product that is aesthetically uplifting and has a handmade composition, whilst embracing the ability to create meaningful effects that digital technology affords, with a focus on supporting energy for pleasure and recreation – not just for productivity and waking but to encourage wholehearted living.
I am a musician, sound artist and musical instrument designer. My work in musical instrument design focuses on the development of new musical instruments; predominantly acoustic and mechanical, with a particular penchant for those in the bass/sub-bass register. One of the central aims of my work in creating new musical instruments is to develop fresh interfaces with sound for both performer and audience.
I have an almost unhealthy fascination with sound, often being distracted by a squeaky shoe or the sound of the ventilation system when I should be concentrating on something else.
I also perform live electronic/dance music – mainly using self-built acoustic instruments – and drone, doom metal influenced music on tuba.

Ruth Claxton is an Artist. Her work has been presented nationally and internationally by galleries and projects including Ikon Gallery, Site Santa Fe, Spike Island, Whitechapel Gallery, Situations and the Guangzhou Triennial. She has work in the Arts Council Collection, and in 2012 she won the Arts Foundation’s Yoma Sasburg Sculpture Fellowship. She is a founding Director of Eastside Projects where she works alongside Gavin Wade to lead the organisation and has co-curated projects including Sculpture Show (2009), Achaintre, Barker, Channer (2012), Samara Scott: Silks (2015), Birmingham Show (2015), Production Show (2016-18) and mix rice: Migrating Flavours (2018).
In 2014 she initiated research that led to the Birmingham Production Space proposal (2015), which outlined an ambitious proposition for a new, large scale, national centre for the production of art and design. Many of these ideas have been realised through STEAMhouse, a new £3.5million centre for cross sector, interdisciplinary collaborative and creative innovation, developed in partnership with Birmingham City University and funded by ERDF and Arts Council England, which opened in Birmingham in 2018. As STEAMhouse Creative Director she leads the Open Route which supports artists and other creative makers to test and make new work and develop their practice and career.
