STEAMmates: Meet- Bharti Parmar 

Bharti is an artist and academic with an MA in Fine Art from the Royal College of Art and a PhD in material culture studies (awarded 2009 University of Wolverhampton).

For over 25 years she has exhibited in the UK and overseas and her work is held in institutional collections including the V&A and the Pitt Rivers Museum, University of Oxford.

She was artist in residence at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2017 and recently participated in #ITVCreates, the channel’s on screen re-branding project.

“I’m at STEAMhouse to explore a project about the craft of marquetry and veneering. I’m interested in the poetics and mechanics of repair and in celebrating the natural defects in surfaces.”

Bharti takes interest in vernacular crafts, systems, taxonomy, her work is executed in a variety of formats from print, photographic installations, sculpture to embroidery. Holding a doctorate degree in Fine Art and being a trustee of several art organisations and a regular speaker in the fields if material culture studies, textiles, craft, empire and the post-colonial archive.
