STEAMmates: Meet- Claire Cotterill

Claire has worked as an artist since graduating from Birmingham School of Art, mainly on projects with a high degree of participation with people of all ages. She has specialised in the medium of mosaics, creating mosaic installations in a wide range of environments. Over the last three years, she began to incorporate the use of digital creative media and new technologies in her work.

“It was through conversation with an old friend (an old school programming geek ! ) based in Barcelona, that I began the search for a Maker Space. He was part of a Maker Space in Barcelona and talked about the benefits of creative and digital professionals collaborating, the very different skills they bring to the table. It was through a google search I came across STEAMhouse.”

Claire is currently working on producing a new range of ‘mosaic products’ more affordable in the market, than a handmade original piece.

“I’ve had the support at STEAMhouse to upskill, exploring digital technologies and cast mosaics in various materials, including bio-materials, as part of their materials research group. I’m looking forward to exploring this further in Phase 1.5 and this support is crucial to me as many of us have to change and adapt our ways of working and producing in these unprecedented and uncertain times ! I’m always recommending STEAMhouse to people and encourage anyone who wants to expand their skills and their business to check out the wealth of support and access to new creative and digital technologies on offer.”
