STEAMhouse members have been experimenting with biomaterials with Sarah King, STEAMhouse Print Technician, and Materiom to create new colours, designs and bio plastic. Here is a super simple introduction to bio plastics to try without the need for a lab.

Bio plastics are materials, with a similar look and feel to normal plastics but are created from all natural ingredients, of which you can find many already in your kitchen. They are environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

This recipe is for anyone that wants to try and have a go at creating their own bio plastic at home. The recipe is nice and simple and you should be able to find everything you need already in your kitchen.

Once you have played around with the basic recipe you can try switching out ingredients to create different textures or try adding in waste materials like egg shell or coffee grounds to create interesting colours.

If you want to learn more and have a go at a few more recipes then head over to Materiom.org, they have an open source recipe book of ideas for different bio plastics and other all natural materials.
