Meet Susie Chilcott and her handmade guitar creations

STEAMmates: Meet Susie Chillcott, STEAMhouse member and instrument maker whose primary focus is on creating handmade acoustic guitars.

Her instruments are made using traditional methods and materials including hand carved necks, tuned soundboards, scalloped bracing and natural glues and finishes. Hand-built to exacting standards, each guitar is built to be responsive, tonally balanced and tailored to the player.

Susie trained as a luthier at Newark violin school and has exhibited at the National Centre for Craft and Design.

“STEAMhouse has allowed me to explore metalwork, screen printing, 3D print and more. I’m currently prototyping instruments that utilise these techniques in combination with traditional making methods.” STEAMhouse has also enabled Susie to extend her ways of making, to source new materials and to explore fresh creative avenues.
