The Local Industrial Strategy for the West Midlands builds on the heritage of the region’s manufacturing, research and technology sectors. The strategy sets out how the West Midlands will take advantage of the incredible skills, infrastructure and innovation of our region.
In the same week as celebrating its first birthday, STEAMhouse has been featured in the new Local Industrial Strategy for the West Midlands – the first of its kind in the UK.
STEAMhouse is highlighted as a notable case study and described as “a co-working space for businesses, artists and academics designed to enable small businesses and artists to work together on new projects and business ideas”.
Celebrating its birthday in May, STEAMhouse has already supported 50 new enterprises, seen 45 new products and processes created, and provided over 6,500 hours of business support. The future of STEAMhouse has also taken an exciting step forward with the granting of planning permission for the plans to regenerate the 120-year-old derelict Belmont Works building on Cardigan Street in Birmingham’s Eastside into STEAMhouse Phase Two.
The West Midlands Local Industrial Strategy was launched on 16 May. The strategy sets out how the region will take advantage of skills, infrastructure and innovation to drive growth, increase productivity and tackle the ‘four grand challenges’ of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data, an ageing society, clean growth and future mobility that are expected to create economic, technological and societal change across the global economy.
Our Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Julian Beer said: “While it’s great news that STEAMhouse has been highlighted specifically within the Governments Industrial Strategy for the West Midlands, Birmingham City University will also be playing a role in a number of other areas highlighted within it. We are heavily engaged in 5G, media and the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as in other areas such as healthcare and the environment and we will be playing our role in a wide variety of ways in supporting the strategy.”
