STEAMhouse Steer Conversation on how we can support entrepreneurship in Greater Birmingham at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) Quarterly Report (February 2025)

David Mellor, Head of Growth at STEAMhouse, delivered an inspiring presentation at the Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce (GBCC) Quarterly Business Report event, emphasizing the significant impact of entrepreneurship on regional prosperity.

Driving Business Growth and Innovation

David started by outlining the BCU 2030 Strategy – Rooted in Birmingham, Reaching Beyond, and our intention to become the top university in the Midlands for boosting regional growth, innovation and skills. 3 pillars that support the BCU 2030 Strategy are also a mutually beneficial growth system: Powering Prosperity, Creating Knowledge For Good, and Creating Talent For Tomorrow all drive the region in a reciprocal manner by encouraging entrepreneurship.

By facilitating cross-sector collaboration and delivering open innovation challenges, STEAMhouse has worked with organisations in the region to drive advancements in key areas such as digital transformation, creative industries, transport technology, and low-carbon solutions. These initiatives have led to increased business sustainability, enhanced product development, and greater regional investment in cutting-edge industries.

Creating Real-World Impact by Reaching out at Scale

It was discussed that how by reaching out at scale, STEAMhouse and other organisations in the Greater Birmingham region deliver tangible benefits and real human impact to individuals and communities. David highlighted several examples of this from a STEAMhouse perspective; a global Fintech open innovation programmer rooted in Birmingham has potentially personally benefitted up to three million personal finance customers globally, while targeted support for underrepresented groups in Greater Birmingham – such as 10 female founders from underserved communities—demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusivity and social impact. One case study demonstrated how a one-person creative business achieved 42% expansion with support in just one year. These success stories underscore the power of a well-supported entrepreneurial environment in fostering long-term sustainability and economic resilience.

A Sustainable and Collaborative Future

Through a combination of funded programs and commercial initiatives, STEAMhouse is ensuring a balanced and sustainable model that caters to businesses at all stages of growth. By investing in regional talent, fostering innovation, and creating strong industry partnerships, the organization is laying the foundation for continued economic progress in Birmingham.

“Entrepreneurialism flourishes in mutually supportive communities. It’s not just about facilities—it’s about the people, ideas, and collaborations that drive meaningful change,” Mellor concluded.

The discussion ended on an emphasis of the fact that as ever, an entrepreneurial ecosystem does not just have an economic impact, it has a human one too.
