Jan Waterson

Senior Technician - Woodwork

About

Jan is Senior Technician at STEAMhouse. A woodworking specialist he supports members through all stages of the design and make process, helping connect the dots between materials, design and fabrication. He works at STEAMhouse 2.5 days each week.

From his Birmingham-based studio he designs and makes furniture and objects, both speculatively and to commission, for an international private and commercial client base.
Whilst he trained in fine furniture-making he feels no allegiance to a particular approach. Instead, his work explores and utilizes digital manufacturing methods, alongside traditional hand production. His design process uses CAD and rapid prototyping techniques, but he is a firm believer in designing from the workbench, a way of making informed by material play and a ‘mock it up and see’ approach.

“As a craftsperson I communicate through the tools and materials at my disposal. For me it’s not about pursuing perfection, it’s about exploring and understanding tools and processes and using them accordingly as they’re best suited to a design brief. Often there’s more to be learned from the mistakes than there are the successes!”
